PhD program

The goal of the PhD program in Engineering is to form researchers with the ability to lead and contribute to the advance of science and technology, at a national and international level. Specifically at COPA, our goal is to form researchers capable of doing and leading meaningful research related to Optimization, Probability Models and Decision Making.

The general course load requirements of the PhD program in Engineering can be found here. Doctoral students hosted by COPA are expected to select their classes from graduate level courses offered by engineering, computer science, mathematics, economics and operations management departments. A selection of suggested courses in Uniandes is shown below.

In addition to the coursework, to graduate, the student should pass two examinations: the candidacy examination and the dissertation defense. The candidacy examination should be completed by the end of the first year. This examination includes a written part and an oral presentation. In the written part the student will be given a set of technical questions related to linear programming, network flows and probability models. The submission of the written part will be followed by the presentation, in which the student should (1) be prepared to answer questions about the written part, and (2) present the research proposal. The candidacy examination should be completed at the end of the first year of the PhD. The dissertation defense is a presentation open to the public in which the student presents the results of his/her doctoral research.

Additional information regarding the Phd Program in Engineering  and the requirements to apply can be found here. If you are interested in applying, please contact one of the faculty members associated with COPA (choose the one that relates more to your research interest), so we can schedule an interview.
